The latest rage in the hotel
industry is to pass on incidental charges in excess of room cost and tax. According to a recent USA Today study, some hotels are charging as much as $24 per day for housekeeping and up to $100 for an earlier day check-out. You may see extra charges for energy use, using airport transportation facilities or pay a franchise fee. Over $1 billion dollars was collected as add-ons or fees in 2000. When you make a hotel reservation with a human, ask questions about these extra charges. Are there any additional mandatory fees or add-on fees not included in the room rate and tax? If you are faced with a surprise fee on your hotel folio, dispute the charges while you are a guest of the hotel and with the front desk manager. Do you believe that the newspaper placed just outside of your hotel door in the morning is complimentary? The cost could show up on your bill. |
