In just a few more years, three out of four adolescents will use
wireless phone service.  That's due mostly to the low cost of service.
The cost of a cell phone call has dropped 25% in the last year.

There are deals out there and then there are rip-offs.  Matatan sees the
biggest dangers in signing any more than a one-year contract with a
service provider.
Or, paying hundreds of dollars to get out of a minimal contract.
There are many different reasons why people carry wireless phones.  Most families like all members to have them for safety purposes.  Cell phone companies try to tell us they too are concerned about our safety and how easily we can be reached in emergencies, but lock us into contracts and un-friendly terms.

Matatan reminds us that it is very important to negotiate or request a
30-day out clause in the terms and agreement forms.  That means that if
the service is poor, unreliable or doesn't work in critical areas you
travel to, you would be permitted to terminate the agreement and return
the phone.  The minimum a reliable company will extend is a two-week
trial period.  Give the service a good test.  Does it live up to the
advertised terms?  Is it reliable?
